Urgency: Making Photographs During a Crisis
Student Final Projects
“Congratulations to the Summer 2021 students of the “Urgency” special topics photography course. This page highlights the final projects of these students, each of which derived from a self-conceived topic influenced by unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. This student group includes a diverse group of thinkers pursuing various academic majors and photographic interests. ”
This Special Topics course introduced photography’s fundamental practices and concepts, while exploring how these fundamentals are reshaped by the global crisis of COVID-19. This course explored the ways the pandemic impacts photographic practice both practically and as a matter of content. That is, how does one make photographs while sheltering in place and practicing social distancing? Furthermore, how does one make photographs that capture the cultural, political, and socioeconomic present in all its complexities and urgencies?
